Meet Marvellous Oke, expected graduate at Morgan State University 2020 and future Pediatrician Neurologist.

The Williams-Franklin Foundation had the pleasure of awarding Marvellous Oke, originally from Nigeria, the WFF 2019 – 2020 scholarship award. Known for her passion for working with children, Ms. Oke has goals of attending medical school to become a pediatrician neurologist and also researching in the neuroscience field. When asked to elaborate a bit more on this topic, she explained the idea stemmed from her enjoyment of studying mental health disorders and the effect of substance abuse on the brain. Ms. Oke’s objective is to combine her initial interest in traditional research with a passion for practicing medicine to obtain her goal.

Ms. Oke’s objective is to combine her initial interest in traditional research with a passion for practicing medicine to obtain her goal.

During the interview, we covered several topics, but the most important one is how she found the Williams-Franklin Foundation. Ms. Oke was part of another program and was coming into her last year at Morgan State University. She thought to herself how the final year would be funded? Being resourceful, Ms. Oke submitted her email to receive Howard University bulletin board notifications on scholarships. Shortly after, she obtained information about how to apply and filled everything out and submitted before the deadline.

When asked about the process for the application for the WFF scholarship, she stated: “The process was pretty seamless. Ms. Oke went on to describe the culture of the organization. “Being part of the WFF simply means you receive an additional amount of support that is continually pushing students forward towards reaching a greater height. It is like having a support group that you did not know you need.” — Marvellous Oke. Her experience throughout the years has broadened, gaining friends, a bigger network, and, most of all, peace of mind of graduation. She spoke very highly of the organization, but the biggest takeaway she says is to have an open mind to the network and experiences provided to you by the program.

In addition to Ms. Oke attending Morgan State University, she also volunteers in the community, mentors kids, services low-income families, and homeless in the Baltimore, MD area. Coming up this summer, Marvellous Oke will be a graduate, and that is an excellent achievement. So, she was asked what does graduation mean to you? Ms. Oke responds, “Graduation means that I have achieved the first phase/goal towards my long-term goal. It is a combination of hard work and life teaching experiences.”
