Janiya Brooks

Returning Awardee Janiya Brooks, expected class of 2023, is from Capitol Heights, Maryland. Janiya is studying Biology at Howard University. Janiya is a participant in the Mayo Clinic Undergraduate Plummer Scholars Program, for which she is mentored by medical students and collaborates with undergraduate students on scientific projects. She also participates in the SEA-PHAGES Honors Biology Program as an undergraduate researcher in genome annotation and bioinformatic analyses. Additionally, she is a participant in the Preparation of Underrepresented Minorities in Medicine Program for which she receives course materials for the Medical College Admissions Test and attends professional development seminars. This summer, Janiya conducted Molecular Biology research at the University of California Berkeley. Upon graduation, Janiya will attend medical school to become a Pediatric Cardiologist and open her own practice in Prince George’s County, Maryland.
